What it does

Dinamo Font Gauntlet is a free browser tool for proofing and animating fonts. It can explore variable axes, compare text at different sizes and generate static instances from an eligible variable font.

A variable font can look convincing at its named instances while showing an awkward transition between them. Open your font, press Play and watch its axes combine; Pause and Reset let you stop or return to the starting values. The Features panel introduces axis clipping, a waterfall view and other controls, including animation driven by audio or mouse movement.

Use a word with repeated curves and diagonals when inspecting a width axis, then pause at a suspicious shape and examine its outlines in your font editor. The tool also provides font information and a language panel. This makes it useful for investigating one behavior at a time, rather than treating a moving specimen as a complete quality check.

Font Gauntlet is free to use. Dinamo says opened files stay in the browser, while generating an instance can send the font to its server for processing and immediate deletion. The instance-generation notice requires permission to modify the font under its licence.

Strengths

  • Axis animation exposes intermediate variable-font states.
  • Waterfall, language and font-information views support different checks.
  • Can generate a static instance when the font and licence permit it.

Watch out for

  • Instance generation can involve server processing.

Best for

  • Variable font designers
  • Inspecting transitions between named instances
