What it does
Fontra is an open-source editor for font outlines, components and variable designs. Fontra Pak bundles its server for macOS, Windows and Linux, opening the editing interface in the default browser.
Download Fontra Pak from the project’s website for a self-contained local setup. The browser is the editor window; the bundled server reads and writes the font data on your computer. A separate source-install route is available for developers who want to run or modify the project themselves.
The current implementation includes live interpolation, variable components, axis sliders, kerning and OpenType-feature editing. Text shaping and right-to-left layout are also marked implemented. For an existing project, check the format route carefully: designspace and UFO sources can be read and written, Glyphs files use a plugin with partial write support, and finished TTF or OTF fonts require an export step. Fontra Pak provides Export As for that output.
Fontra remains in development. Its roadmap still distinguishes completed tools from planned work such as collaborative annotations and in-browser scripting. The public GPL-licensed code and local distribution are available without a product account; remotely hosted deployments can have their own access arrangements.
Strengths
- Fontra Pak packages a local server for browser editing.
- Implemented tools cover variable design, kerning and text shaping.
- The roadmap distinguishes supported format paths from planned features.
Watch out for
- Glyphs-format writing is partial and plugin-based.
- Editing a finished TTF or OTF requires a new export.
- Some planned collaboration and scripting tools remain unimplemented.
Best for
- Variable font design exploration
- Designers evaluating an open-source font workflow
