What it does
Adobe Fonts provides desktop font activation and hosted webfonts through an Adobe account. A free selection supports personal and commercial work, while a Creative Cloud subscription opens the wider catalog.
Use the language and classification filters to narrow the catalog, then open a family and choose the weights you need. Desktop fonts are added through the Creative Cloud desktop app and appear in your applications’ font menus. A few applications need restarting before new fonts appear.
For a website, choose Add to Web Project on a family page. Name the project, select its styles, and put the supplied embed code in the site’s head section. Apply the listed font-family names in your CSS. Manage Fonts lets you change the selected styles, character set and OpenType features. Adobe requires its hosted embed code; these files cannot be downloaded for self-hosting.
The free account offer includes more than 5,000 fonts for personal and commercial use. When handing off desktop work, properly embedded PDFs and outlined or rasterized artwork can go to a client without transferring font files. A client editing live text needs their own access. App embedding and products that let customers select fonts for their own text require separate foundry licensing.
Strengths
- Language and classification filters help narrow a multi-foundry catalog.
- Web projects expose character-set, OpenType-feature and font-display settings.
Watch out for
- Editable client work requires the client’s own font access.
- Webfonts must use Adobe’s hosting; app embedding and customer font-selection tools need separate licensing.
Best for
- Adobe-account users choosing desktop and hosted web typography
