What it does

Florian Karsten Typefaces publishes original retail and custom fonts. Its open-source projects include Space Grotesk and Montagu Slab.

FK Raster Grotesk shows the catalog’s experimental side through controls labeled Pixels and Joints. Switch between Static and Variable or Normal and Compact, then use the feature switches to compare forms and figures. Its specimen and language list provide more detail than the large sample alone.

The retail Basic licence combines desktop installation with self-hosted web use, starting at three workstations and one domain with 10,000 monthly unique visitors. Payment is made once, with no time limit; higher usage needs the appropriate tier. Enter the licence owner in the cart, continue to Paddle checkout and receive the font download by email. Other organisations and subcontractors need their own coverage unless included in a corporate arrangement.

Space Grotesk provides a separate free production choice under the SIL Open Font License. Its Download Typeface link goes to public GitHub releases. That is distinct from the retail trial package, which has fewer characters and is only for evaluation or client presentations. Static and variable releases also use different desktop file formats, explained in the FAQ.

Strengths

  • Includes both paid retail designs and openly licensed production fonts.
  • Raster Grotesk exposes its construction through dedicated controls.
  • The Basic retail licence combines desktop and web coverage.

Watch out for

  • Retail trial files have limited character coverage.
  • Collaborators outside the licence owner need separate or corporate coverage.

Best for

  • Experimental display typography
  • Studios comparing retail and open-source font options
