What it does
Google Fonts offers downloadable font families with open licences and per-family information about designers, languages and variable-font axes. Its official repository contains TrueType files and the licence for each family. The files can be self-hosted, subject to those licence terms.
Download files for self-hosting
The Google Fonts repository keeps each family in its own directory with TrueType (.ttf) files, descriptive information and a licence. Developers can download a family’s files, clone the collection with Git or obtain a complete ZIP snapshot. The repository also points to Fontsource packages for projects that use a package manager.
Most families use the SIL Open Font License; others use Apache 2.0 or the Ubuntu Font License. These are not interchangeable texts. Some OFL families reserve their names when modified, so keep the licence with the downloaded files and check its conditions before releasing a derivative.
Language metadata and the variable-axis registry provide additional details when a project needs particular scripts or adjustable weights and widths.
