What it does

Fontstand is a font discovery and streaming service. It offers free trials, monthly font rental and subscriptions to participating foundries, with desktop and iPad applications.

In the Fontstand app, find a family and choose Try Free for evaluation or Rent for a 30-day licence. Trials need a name and email, without payment details. Rental confirmation lets you set sharing and automatic renewal. Activated rental fonts keep working offline until the rental ends.

Individual rentals can become permanent after twelve 30-day periods, even when those periods are not consecutive. You can then download the font files with the foundry’s licence. Foundry subscriptions work differently: they provide access to a participating foundry’s library while you subscribe and never build toward permanent ownership. That option requires Fontstand 3 on macOS; older Mac and Windows apps do not expose subscription fonts.

Finished artwork can continue to be used after a rental expires. Editing it with the font requires renewed access. Families marked Desktop & Web also offer hosted webfonts; their files are not available for self-hosting through the rental service.

Strengths

  • Offers short font rentals that can build toward permanent licences.
  • Activated rental fonts work offline for the rental period.
  • Provides hosted webfonts for participating families.

Watch out for

  • Foundry subscriptions require Fontstand 3 on macOS and do not become permanent.
  • Trial fonts may have substituted characters and are for evaluation only.

Best for

  • Designers comparing fonts before committing to a project.
  • Short projects considering rental instead of a full license purchase.
