What it does

Formagari publishes Emmanuel Besse’s retail families, including Cedrat, Scenery, Sancy and Insitu, and provides custom type services. Fully functional trial files support evaluation and school projects; commercial production requires a paid licence.

Cedrat separates Display, Standard and Text optical sizes. Display has stronger contrast for titles, Standard bridges larger and smaller settings, and Text is designed for sustained reading. Each branch has roman and italic styles, small capitals, superscript letters and numeral options. Use the type tester’s OpenType menu to compare ligatures, oldstyle figures and Flat Caps before choosing a family or individual styles. Sancy offers a different pairing through its serif and slab branches.

Trials lets you select particular families or Select all, then request the files with your name and email. The form includes consent to the mailing list. These are complete-character evaluation fonts, and the EULA also permits school projects. Work outside academic settings, including showing an unfinished project publicly in a portfolio, needs a commercial licence.

The purchase panel starts with Company size and Licenses / Uses. Count the organisation’s employees and subcontractors, then select the relevant desktop, web, video or app use. The client benefiting from the work owns the licence; its designer is covered for that project, but cannot carry the same licence into another client’s work. Logos, advertising campaigns, merchandise and shared-server use require a separate quote. Desktop files are OTF, while self-hosted web use requires the supplied WOFF or WOFF2 files.

Strengths

  • Cedrat provides three optical sizes with detailed numeral and letter features.
  • Complete-character trials support school projects as well as evaluation.
  • A client’s licence covers the designer working on that client’s project.

Watch out for

  • A client’s licence cannot be reused for another client.
  • Logos, campaigns, merchandise and server use need separately quoted coverage.
  • Users cannot modify, convert or subset the font files.

Best for

  • Editorial typography using optical sizes
  • Students developing complete academic layouts
  • Studios evaluating type for a named client
