What it does

Mari is a 3D texture-painting application with projection painting, UDIM workflows, layers, masks and a node graph. Its export tools separate editable painting work from flattened texture deliveries. Mari Individual is a paid subscription; the free Non-commercial edition is limited to personal learning and experiments.

Projection paint can be adjusted in context before it is baked onto the model. Layers and nodes then combine painted detail, masks and procedural changes across texture tiles.

For a batch of flattened textures, open Channels > Export Manager. Choose the object and Export Root Path, then select the channels or Bake Point nodes to include. Set their size, colour space, bit depth and filenames. Export Current writes the selected object's items; Export All processes every object's export items and closes the dialog. The same source can produce multiple variants, such as a full-size EXR and a smaller JPEG.

Export settings stay with the project. Saved settings apply to selected objects, and reloading them requires matching channel or Bake Point names. Small Textures can reduce constant-colour patches to 8×8 pixels; turn it off when every patch must retain its full size.

Mari Individual is EUR 629 per year or EUR 78 per month, plus applicable taxes, for one named user, including suitable small-company use. Free Non-commercial access is for personal learning and experiments. It limits exports to 4K, six UV patches per object and five objects, disables Python, and creates .mnc projects that commercial Mari cannot open. It also excludes unpaid third-party service work and classroom instruction.

Strengths

  • Export Manager can produce differently sized or formatted variants of one texture source.
  • Projection adjustments can be made before paint is committed to the model.

Watch out for

  • Reloaded export settings depend on matching channel or Bake Point names.
  • Non-commercial projects cannot open in commercial Mari and cannot serve third-party work.

Best for

  • Texture artists delivering several versions of tiled assets
  • Personal painting studies within the Non-commercial limits
