What it does
FreeCAD is a free, open-source parametric modeller for physical objects. It combines constrained sketches, editable model history and specialized workbenches for tasks such as assemblies and BIM. Windows, Mac and Linux builds support native FCStd projects and common CAD exchange formats.
FreeCAD starts with geometry-constrained sketches and builds editable objects from them. A bracket or enclosure can retain dimensions and relationships in its model history, so changing a parameter recalculates the dependent shape. Numeric values, text, switches and other objects can all drive properties.
Different workbenches cover Part Design, assemblies, BIM, machining and analysis. The built-in Assembly workbench constrains parts in 3D, while the BIM workbench handles building projects. Python commands and recorded macros provide routes for repeated work.
The native project format is FCStd. Exchange options include STEP, IGES, OBJ, STL, DXF, SVG and IFC, with additional formats available through add-ons. Use the stable installer for Windows, macOS or Linux; many Linux distributions also offer FreeCAD through their software centre. The application is open source, and its project describes the files and data you create as your own.
