What it does

Freelancer.com offers project bidding and contests across many freelance skills. Members can create a profile and portfolio, discuss project requirements and use milestone payments, with account limits and charges that affect the cost of taking work.

The free membership includes an initial allowance of six bids per month. Bidding also requires a minimum account balance of US$20, with higher balances possible for certain projects or accounts. That distinction matters for someone expecting to submit a proposal without first funding an account.

Project charges depend on the arrangement. The standard freelancer fee for a fixed-price project is 10% or US$5, whichever is greater; hourly projects carry a 10% fee. Paid memberships add features and bid capacity, while withdrawals have method-specific charges. An inactive account also has a cost: after six months without logging in, a maintenance fee of up to US$14 per month can apply, refundable on request after reactivation. Work out the likely fee, bidding capacity and account balance together before deciding which projects are worth pursuing.

Strengths

  • Provides both project bidding and contest routes
  • Publishes detailed project, withdrawal and membership charges

Watch out for

  • A funded account balance is required to bid, and project and inactivity fees can apply.

Best for

  • Freelancers comparing project opportunities with explicit bidding costs
