What it does

Freetrade provides app and browser access to stocks, funds, ETFs and bonds through UK investment accounts. Basic includes general investing, ISA, pension and Junior ISA access without a subscription. Standard and Plus reduce foreign-exchange charges and add benefits.

Choose the account purpose first: general investing, a stocks and shares ISA, a self-invested personal pension, or a Junior ISA. Each has its own eligibility and withdrawal rules. The plan then changes service benefits and foreign-exchange costs.

Plan Subscription Fee on non-GBP trades
Basic £0 0.99%
Standard £59.88 billed annually, equivalent to £4.99 monthly 0.59%
Plus £119.88 billed annually, equivalent to £9.99 monthly 0.39%

Paid plans also offer monthly billing at different rates. The three plans share access to the full investment range and commission-free dealing, but taxes, fund expenses and applicable other charges still matter. A paid plan’s lower currency fee is most relevant when comparing actual non-GBP activity.

Registration requires UK tax residence and a UK bank account. British applicants provide their National Insurance number; other eligible residents provide the relevant national identifier. US citizens, including dual nationals, cannot sign up. Get started leads to registration, with further documents requested if automatic identity checks fail.

Strengths

  • Basic includes several UK account types without a subscription
  • Both app and browser access are available

Watch out for

  • Non-GBP trades incur a currency fee even on paid plans
  • Access requires UK residence and excludes US citizens

Best for

  • Eligible UK residents comparing account types and currency costs
  • Investors who want commission-free dealing with a no-subscription option
