What it does
FreeType is a C library for rendering vector and bitmap fonts. Its site provides a technical reference, tutorials, format information and release notes for developers working with glyph images and metrics.
FreeType handles the step between a font file and drawable glyph images. Its introductory C tutorial starts with FT_Init_FreeType, opens a particular face with FT_New_Face and sets a character or pixel size. You then load a glyph with FT_Load_Glyph and, when needed, turn its outline into a bitmap with FT_Render_Glyph. The returned image and placement metrics let an application draw it at the correct baseline.
This is useful for a custom renderer, printer or font-inspection tool. A font file may contain several faces, and the tutorial explains how to select one or load font data already held in memory. Shaping and paragraph layout remain separate responsibilities, usually handled with other libraries. FreeType is free software with a choice of the FreeType License, which has a credit clause, or GPLv2.
Strengths
- Provides detailed glyph-loading tutorials and API documentation.
- Supports many vector and bitmap font formats.
Watch out for
- A C library requires integration into an application.
- Font rendering alone does not provide a complete paragraph-layout system.
Best for
- Developers building font rendering or document software.
- Technical investigations of glyph metrics and rasterisation.
