What it does
GanttProject is a free and open-source desktop project management application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports task hierarchies and dependencies, milestones, baselines, Gantt and PERT charts, resource planning, cost calculation, and Microsoft Project file interoperability.
Build a project schedule locally with dependencies, milestones, resources, costs, and Gantt or PERT views. GanttProject works offline with no subscription required; it can exchange files with Microsoft Project and spreadsheet tools. A commercial cloud collaboration service is offered separately. See the official product page and repository.
Strengths
- Free GPL-3.0 desktop application runs offline on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Gantt, PERT, dependencies, resources, and cost calculation cover core project planning.
- Imports and exports Microsoft Project formats.
Watch out for
- Desktop project files are local by default; collaborative workflows require WebDAV or the separate cloud service.
- Does not aim to reproduce every enterprise project-management feature.
Best for
- Small and medium businesses needing offline project scheduling
- Project managers exchanging plans with Microsoft Project users
