What it does
Gemini’s Integration Time Calculator models observations from source characteristics, instrument configuration, observing conditions and analysis choices.
Gemini's ITC separates source profile/spectrum/brightness, instrument configuration, observing conditions and analysis method. The linked help describes total S/N from exposure settings or integration time for a requested S/N; spectroscopy uses the exposure-based mode because S/N varies with wavelength. Results can be printed, and spectral plots link tab-separated ASCII data with wavelength in nm. User spectra require two space-separated columns, wavelength in nm and flux density per wavelength rather than per Hz, with files smaller than 1 MB; the web form accepts .sed, .txt and .dat. Keep the instrument, source, aperture and sky-subtraction assumptions with a comparison. Supported instruments are explicitly listed, and telescope/instrument performance is approximated.
Strengths
- Instrument-specific observing models
- Separate source, setup and condition inputs
Watch out for
- Only listed instruments are supported
- Calculations use stated performance assumptions and approximations
Best for
- Planning a supported Gemini observing calculation
