What it does

HomeBank is a desktop personal finance application with account records, category budgets and filtered reports. It imports QIF, OFX, QFX and CSV files and can identify duplicate transactions for review.

Begin with a statement file

Set folders for the wallet, backups, imports and exports, then open a new HomeBank file. Drop an OFX file into the window or use File, Import. Choose New account for each separate account; the global option combines them. Save the resulting wallet as an .xhb file.

Classify and budget

Review suspected duplicates, split mixed purchases among categories and use assignment rules for repeated payees or descriptions. Category budgets may stay the same each month or vary across the year. Reports retain chosen filters, and scheduled entries feed the cash-flow forecast. Accounts can be exported as QIF and budgets as CSV.

The project supplies a Windows installer and Linux installation routes. Mac ports are supplied by third parties, and there is no official Android app.

Strengths

  • Duplicate identification during import
  • Split transactions and variable monthly category budgets

Watch out for

  • Mac installation uses third-party ports; there is no official Android app

Best for

  • Desktop users maintaining personal accounts and statement-based budgets
