What it does
Leonardo is a Windows drawing app for pen tablets, with an infinite scrolling canvas, pressure input and perspective tools. It exports PSD for further editing elsewhere. A one-time purchase follows a 15-day trial, and both the trial and paid version require an account.
An open sketchbook with raster limits
The canvas scrolls in any direction, so related studies can sit beside one another. Perspective tools help construct lines and circles, and stabilization smooths inked outlines. The interface supports touch and can suit either drawing hand.
Infinite scrolling does not mean unlimited image detail. Leonardo is raster-based. Its FAQ suggests beginning at 50% or 25% zoom when a higher-resolution drawing is needed. Use File > Export for JPEG or PNG; PSD output can move work into another editor, but PSD import is unavailable.
Access and unfinished features
Install the desktop version and create a Leonardo account, or use the Microsoft Store edition with a Microsoft account. Internet is needed for first use and purchase validation, then drawing works offline. The purchase covers beta and 1.x updates. Custom saveable brushes, text and layer folders are still described as unavailable or under development.
Strengths
- Perspective aids include circles as well as straight lines
- PSD export supports finishing in another painting editor
- Offline drawing is available after initial validation
Watch out for
- PSD files cannot be imported
- Custom saveable brushes and a text tool are unavailable
- One licence cannot be used on devices simultaneously
Best for
- Windows tablet sketching
- Perspective studies spread across a visual idea sheet
