What it does

Pennies is an Apple-device budgeting app focused on the amount left to spend. It supports weekly, monthly, payday and one-off budgets without requiring a bank connection or a separate account. Paid subscription access is offered, with the separate Pennies+ app adding household sharing.

A payday budget follows the income cycle rather than assuming every plan begins on the first day of a month. Pennies lets a budget start on your chosen day and repeat weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly. A trip or renovation can have its own one-off budget and currency.

Enter spending as it happens and watch the amount available for the day change. Spending less today leaves more for tomorrow.

The history view concentrates on spending progress, without detailed charts or tags. Pennies works on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Its budgets sync through your own iCloud, so no separate Pennies registration or bank credentials are required.

Sharing with a household

Pennies+ is a separate iPhone app for a shared budget with up to six people in total. Members sign in with Apple or Google, then join through an emailed link or invitation code. Each person's entered spending updates the same remaining amount for the group.

The Pennies+ Household Plan is billed monthly or yearly, and one subscription covers the invited members. New subscribers can receive a free trial. Existing Pennies budgets and expense history can be imported into Pennies+. The original Pennies also uses subscription access.

Strengths

  • Backdated expenses update the current remaining allowance.
  • Funds can be moved between existing budgets.

Watch out for

  • Spending must be entered manually because there is no bank connection.
  • Detailed charts and transaction tags are outside the app's scope.
  • Household sharing requires the separate Pennies+ iPhone app and a sign-in.

Best for

  • People who want a simple remaining-spending amount aligned with payday
  • Small households willing to record shared spending manually
