What it does
ab-av1 uses FFmpeg and quality metrics to search for an encoder CRF setting. It offers automatic encoding, quality searches, and short sample encodes with estimates.
auto-encode searches CRF and then runs a full FFmpeg encode. crf-search and sample-encode can stop at samples, reporting mean metric score and predicted full size/time. XPSNR can replace VMAF, and JSON stdout supports automation. Compatible H.264/H.265 encoders are also supported. Optional verify fully decodes output and checks duration within 2s of input; fail-fast stops at the first FFmpeg error. The required FFmpeg build enables libsvtav1/libvmaf/libopus on PATH. Sample predictions, decode checks and visual review address different output properties.
Strengths
- Separates short quality searches from full-file encoding.
Best for
- Tuning repeatable video encodes against a chosen metric
