What it does

Internet Friendly Media Encoder, or IFME, encodes, remuxes, and repackages media. Its encoder plugins can be updated separately, and it handles subtitles, attachments, and multiple tracks.

Select streams to encode, copy or omit, including subtitle/font attachments and merged tracks. Encoder plugins use JSON manifests discovered at startup, allowing a build to be replaced without updating the frontend. IFME checks architecture and can test an encoder binary. The current README requires AVX and 64-bit Windows 10+; AVX2 is recommended and affects encoder availability. Linux uses Mono, but bundled plugins contain Windows binaries, so Linux needs native processing tools and matching manifests. SourceForge is the recommended current download route; GitHub can lag. The listed UHD/HDR recommendation includes about 70 GB of temporary disk space.

Strengths

  • Separates encoder updates from the main interface through plugins.
