What it does

Bambu Studio is a Windows, Mac and Linux slicer for 3D printing. It combines multiple build plates, material painting, support tools, object-level settings and a G-code viewer. The slicer core is open source under AGPL version 3; its optional networking plugin uses a separate licence.

A project can hold several plates and apply slicing parameters globally, to an object or to a part. Auto-orientation and arrangement, painted materials, support types and assembly views help organise a multi-part print. STEP import and filament-flushing controls are also included.

The command-line guide documents a direct route from a prepared 3MF to sliced output. Supply the project file, use --slice 0 for all plates or a specific plate number, and add --export-3mf output.3mf to write the result. A 3MF can supply its own printer, filament and process settings. For an STL input, the documented route loads complete machine, process and filament JSON settings, then orients, arranges and slices the model.

Setting precedence matters: explicit command-line values override loaded JSON, which overrides settings embedded in the 3MF. The load options require full configurations, rather than partial resource profiles; at most one machine and one process configuration may be loaded.

The slicer core is published under AGPL version 3. The optional Bambu networking plugin uses non-free libraries and adds networking functions. The repository states that slicing and SD-card delivery remain available without this plugin. Those are separate licensing and transfer choices.

Strengths

  • Global, object and part settings keep local changes within a multi-plate project.
  • The documented command route controls plate selection and exports the sliced 3MF.

Watch out for

  • Command-line configuration files must be complete settings, not partial resource profiles.
  • Extended Bambu networking uses an optional plugin with non-free libraries.

Best for

  • Multi-part projects distributed across several print plates
  • Repeatable slicing with explicitly chosen machine, material and process settings
