What it does
Unison synchronizes two sets of files across Windows and POSIX systems, detecting conflicts when both copies have changed.
Use Unison when a laptop folder and a server folder both receive edits. It propagates non-conflicting updates and displays conflicts rather than treating one side as the only source of truth. The synchronized copies remain ordinary local files, so work can continue offline. Communication is typically over SSH, and repeat mode can use a filesystem monitor. Choose a current formal release or newer source: the project says earlier releases are unmaintained even when a package system still offers them.
Strengths
- Two-way change reconciliation with conflict detection
- Files remain available as ordinary offline copies
Best for
- Keeping independently edited folders aligned
