What it does
Blanc is an Electron/Chromium desktop browser with built-in ad and tracker filtering, private tabs and documented sandbox and context-isolation choices.
Blanc's repository documents the security choices behind its small interface. Public web tabs request Chromium sandboxing, disable Node integration and use context isolation. On Linux, the current documented behavior refuses to start when the launcher disables the sandbox. That is a meaningful deployment condition to understand before installing an AppImage.
The project also bundles verified filter-list snapshots. Its published security assessment is described as a developer assessment rather than an independent audit, which keeps the evidence claim appropriately narrow.
The code uses the MIT License. Bundled EasyList and EasyPrivacy data uses CC BY-SA 3.0 or later, and the project names and assets have separate notices. Patron is optional support and unlocks no browser features.
Strengths
- Explicit sandbox requirements
- Built-in filter-list blocking
Watch out for
- Linux setups that disable the required sandbox cannot start the documented current build
Best for
- Technical desktop users who want documented browser isolation choices
