What it does

Material Line Icons supplies animated SVG vector icons influenced by Material Design. Developers can choose static files, self-contained SVG animations, CSS animations or individual animation frames. The MIT-licensed files are free to use and download.

Most Material Line Icons draw their shapes in sequence. Names ending in -loop repeat, while -transition icons change between two symbols. The linked icon browser lets you select a symbol and copy its code.

The repository separates delivery methods into folders. svg-static removes movement, svg contains animation within the SVG itself, and svg-style embeds CSS. The CSS versions respect reduced-motion preferences. For a custom renderer, css-json separates the SVG content, classes, animation rules and keyframes.

Software that cannot play the animations can use the SVG frame exports, supplied at 120 frames per second with timing metadata. These exports do not include PNGs. Animation support depends on the target browser; the static files provide an alternative where animation is unavailable. Keep the MIT copyright and permission notice with redistributed files.

Strengths

  • Static artwork, animated files and frame exports share the same icon family.
  • CSS variants include reduced-motion handling.

Watch out for

  • Frame exports are supplied as SVG only.
  • Animation support depends on the target browser and the chosen SVG or CSS variant.

Best for

  • Interface developers adding short state-change animations
  • Developers needing frame-by-frame vector animation assets
