What it does
FinancePy is a Python library for valuation and risk analysis across bonds, equities, currencies and credit instruments. It separates product definitions, models and market data so calculations can be inspected and extended. The library is free under GNU GPL version 3.
FinancePy organizes a valuation around the product, model and market data. Its Python implementations and notebooks suit students or researchers who want to see how those pieces produce a price. Install the public package with python -m pip install financepy; the local workflow does not require a FinancePy account.
A fixed-coupon bond is a useful example of the available controls. The Bond constructor takes issue and maturity dates, coupon, payment frequency and day-count convention, with additional calendar and ex-dividend settings. Methods calculate a clean price from yield, derive yield from a price, and inspect duration or convexity. Payment schedules can be printed or exported as a LaTeX table.
The price-from-yield and yield-from-price methods use different default yield conventions. Supply the same convention explicitly when checking one calculation against the other, rather than assuming their defaults match. Settlement date and the treatment of accrued interest also belong with the result.
The project remains a work in progress. Some models use Numba and take extra compilation time on first use. The GPL licence allows inspection and modification, with conditions for distributing modified software; those terms matter when incorporating the code into a shared application.
Strengths
- Separates product definitions, market inputs and pricing models
- Exposes bond conventions and schedule outputs directly
- Provides inspectable implementations and learning notebooks
Watch out for
- Some models incur compilation time on first use
- Related bond methods have different default yield conventions
Best for
- Students learning how pricing implementations use market conventions
- Python researchers inspecting fixed-income and derivative calculations
