What it does

Elusive Icons supplies a web icon font with CSS, Less and Sass files and a catalog of pictographic symbols.

Elusive Icons is a font-and-CSS toolkit for sites that already use class-based pictograms. The el prefix identifies the base icon classes, with modifiers for larger sizes, fixed-width alignment, borders, rotation, flipping and stacked symbols.

Those details matter when maintaining an existing interface: matching the glyph name alone is not enough if the page also depends on a particular alignment or rotation class. Sass and Less sources allow the toolkit to be incorporated into the site's styling build.

The font uses SIL OFL 1.1, stylesheet code uses MIT, and documentation uses CC BY 3.0. Keep the relevant notices with the parts being redistributed. The repository's development workflow uses Ruby tooling, npm and Jekyll, so maintaining the generated site also involves that build stack.

Strengths

  • The font includes a documented stylesheet toolkit.
  • Stylesheet sources are provided for customization.

Best for

  • Maintaining existing icon-font interfaces
