What it does
Röntgen is a monochrome SVG library created for Map Machine and OpenStreetMap features. It includes npm and Python packages and a command-line grid tool.
Röntgen’s monochrome symbols are drawn for a 14 by 14-pixel area, with at least one-pixel lines. They were created for Map Machine and OpenStreetMap features, which makes the collection a practical choice for small map markers and legends.
Download SVGs individually or as a release ZIP, install @enzet/roentgen for JavaScript, or use roentgen-icons in Python. The Python interface retrieves a named shape and exposes its SVG path or path commands. A command-line grid tool can filter names, choose columns, set scale and output an SVG showing only icons added in a chosen version.
The supplied OpenStreetMap tag file is one possible mapping, so adapt it to the map’s own data rules. The artwork is free under CC BY 4.0 and requires appropriate credit. These public files and packages can be used locally without a Röntgen account.
Strengths
- The documented drawing rules target compact map rendering.
- Grid filtering and package access support map-style workflows.
Watch out for
- Artwork attribution is required under CC BY 4.0.
- The included tag mapping is presented as one possible mapping.
Best for
- Dense OpenStreetMap-derived maps
- Developers generating map legends and icon grids
