What it does
RP2 is a free local cryptocurrency calculator with lot tracking, account balances and configurable reports. Its project warns that per-wallet accounting is unfinished, so it should not be used for US reporting from 2025 onward or other reporting that requires that method.
RP2 reads a configuration file and a transaction spreadsheet, then exposes the relationship between incoming and outgoing lots. Its documented methods include FIFO, LIFO and HIFO. A technical reviewer can trace which acquisition-lot fractions contributed to an outgoing event rather than seeing only a total gain.
Prepare the two input files
The transaction file uses ODS, the OpenDocument spreadsheet format. Each asset has its own sheet. IN records incoming activity, OUT records disposals and INTRA records transfers between the owner's accounts. Timestamps need a time zone. An accompanying INI configuration identifies columns, assets, exchanges and owners. The companion DaLI tool can help prepare these inputs.
Install RP2 with Python 3.10 or later and run the command for the applicable supported country with both files. The -o option chooses the output folder. The full ODS report links its summaries and per-asset calculations back to transaction rows; Open Positions can combine remaining lots with supplied current prices. A generic configuration needs a currency code and holding-period settings, so it is not a ready-made localized tax return.
Reporting limits
Per-wallet accounting remains under development. The project explicitly warns against using RP2 for US tax reporting for 2025 onward, or for other reporting that requires per-wallet accounting, until issue 135 is resolved. A supported calculation method or output format does not remove that limitation.
The country guide also flags Ireland's four-week acquisition and disposal rule as unsupported. Available methods differ by country. The free Apache-2.0 package has no account requirement, premium edition or transaction cap.
Strengths
- Detailed reports preserve links between acquisition lots and outgoing events
- A plugin architecture allows calculation and report extensions
Watch out for
- Current per-wallet reporting requirements are outside the supported calculation scope
- Inputs require a configured ODS workbook and time-zone-aware transaction history
- Ireland’s four-week rule is explicitly unsupported
Best for
- Technical reviewers examining lot calculations in supported accounting configurations
- Developers extending cryptocurrency calculation and reporting tools
