What it does
Fontations is an open-source suite of Rust libraries for reading, writing and inspecting OpenType font data. It provides components for developers building font-processing tools and rendering software.
Choose the library around the application’s job. read-fonts accesses existing font data, while write-fonts provides editable representations of font tables and can write revised files. Enable write-fonts’ optional read-fonts support when the task is to load, modify and save an existing font.
For glyph outlines and higher-level metadata, use skrifa. The small font-types library supplies common OpenType definitions used across the suite. These separate layers let a table-editing utility and a renderer use the components each needs.
The repository also contains Skia and Chromium integration instructions; the project says those build procedures have been tested only on Linux. These are programming libraries, so using them requires application or tooling development. Keep the component-specific licence notices with the code you incorporate.
Strengths
- Parsing, editable font tables and outline access have distinct library components.
- Shared OpenType types connect the related libraries.
Watch out for
- Using the suite requires Rust application or tooling development.
- The documented Skia and Chromium integration procedures have only been tested on Linux.
Best for
- Developers building font-processing and rendering software
