What it does
iputils is a maintained package of small Linux network utilities including ping, arping, tracepath and clockdiff.
Choose the command for the question: the current iputils package includes ping, arping, tracepath and clockdiff. tracepath uses UDP toward a destination and reports responding hops, round-trip times and path-MTU changes, with address-family, packet-length, hop-limit and numeric-output controls. Its manual says it needs network access to send the datagrams but does not require superuser privileges. The return-hop and asymmetry information is an estimate and explicitly unreliable, so do not treat it as a measured reverse route. Package versions matter: the project lists older programs that were removed and their replacements. Use the installed command’s manual when recording a procedure.
Strengths
- Several focused network commands
- Documents removed and replacement tools
Watch out for
- Installed commands and options depend on distribution packaging
