What it does
TypeRig provides a standalone Python geometry core and font-production tools, chiefly for FontLab. Its open-source panels cover outlines, master layers, metrics, anchors and adaptive scaling.
Installing the Python package does not install the GUI scripts. From a local checkout, python -m pip install . installs the library for Python 3.10 or later. The geometry core can run outside an editor, while the FontLab tools need their host installation and APIs.
The main TypeRig Panel uses tabs for tasks such as Node, Contour, Layer and Metrics, with layer and glyph-scope controls at the top. The Layer tab can copy outlines between masters or compare layers side by side. Delta handles adaptive scaling with stem, width and height controls and saved configurations.
Delta Preview displays calculated results before committing them as real font layers. Other tools compare outlines and anchors across fonts or match contour order between masters. The project describes its tools as experimental and evolving, so inspect the selected glyphs and masters before applying a broad operation to a working family.
Strengths
- The geometry core can run independently of a font editor.
- Delta Preview separates visual inspection from writing results into font layers.
Watch out for
- GUI scripts need a separate host installation.
- The project explicitly describes its tools as experimental and evolving.
Best for
- FontLab users automating detailed production work
- Type engineers scripting outline geometry
