What it does
SpendSpentSpent is a self-hosted expense tracker for personal or shared household records. Its browser interface separates quick entry, day-by-day history and longer-term spending comparisons. The software is available under AGPL-3.0; you provide the server and database.
Use Spend, the centre page, to add categories and purchases. The right-hand Spent page lists the selected month's expenses by day and allows deletions. The left-hand Spent page compares overall and category spending by month or year. Optional location information adds context to a purchase.
To host it, use the supplied Docker Compose example with PostgreSQL, or run the application file with Java 21. Configure the database connection, timezone and a permanent SALT value before starting; the developer says that value must not be changed afterward. The example serves the app on port 9001.
Users log in to the hosted instance. Its operator controls whether people can register through ALLOW_SIGNUP, which is disabled by default. Household invitations let family members or roommates see shared expenses without treating every person's record as a separate installation.
Strengths
- Recurring expenses can be added from the entry page.
- Optional image analysis can suggest categories and find amounts from attached pictures when an AI service is configured.
Watch out for
- Password-reset emails and recurring-expense email notifications require a configured mail server.
Best for
- Households with someone able to maintain a server for a shared expense history
