What it does
LosslessCut provides trimming, track extraction, metadata changes, and container remuxing through an FFmpeg-based graphical application. Its main workflows copy encoded data instead of re-encoding it.
If compatible streams are already present, remuxing can change a container such as MKV to MP4 without a full encode. Track controls can also remove or replace audio and subtitles. Merging requires compatible codecs, and playback support has its own format constraints. Those details matter when choosing LosslessCut for a precise delivery job.
Manual executables are available free, while store editions support the maintainer and offer their own update delivery. Windows, macOS and Linux builds are listed. Preview playback can use FFmpeg-assisted conversion for formats the embedded player cannot decode; export still reads the original file. That preview path is different from re-encoding the deliverable. The README also documents a CLI and an HTTP API for automation.
Strengths
- Supports container changes and track edits without routine re-encoding.
Watch out for
- Lossless merging depends on compatible media streams.
Best for
- Container changes and rough cuts that should retain existing encoded media
