What it does
n3n creates peer-to-peer virtual networks with edge nodes and discovery/relay infrastructure, continuing development from the n2n lineage.
n3n uses edge nodes and a publicly reachable supernode. Edges in the same community try direct UDP connections; when NAT prevents that, the supernode relays packets. Configure the community and its encryption key deliberately before adding machines.
The project continues from n2n with its own development direction. Its README warns that some old n2n packages use incompatible protocols, so follow n3n's own configuration guidance. It supplies a private virtual network rather than a consumer browsing exit.
Strengths
- Direct peer-to-peer connection approach
- Current independently maintained lineage
Best for
- Technical users creating a lightweight private virtual network
