What it does
NextTrace is an open-source visual route-tracking command-line tool with several installation options and separate stable and development repositories.
Choose the build and operating mode before using NextTrace in a script. The README’s normal trace accepts a destination and offers JSON, tables, raw output or a log; MTR has its own reporting and streaming formats. Set samples and intervals explicitly, since traditional traceroute and MTR use different defaults and continuous modes can keep running. The maintainers plan a default switch to MTR no earlier than 2027 and advise --traceroute --raw where traditional raw behavior is required. Full, Tiny and ntr builds differ in included features, and Windows remains experimental. Results describe the selected probe origin and destination rather than every possible route.
Strengths
- Route-focused visual output
- Documented installation and output modes
Watch out for
- Scripts should explicitly select their required output mode
