What it does

OpenBB Open Data Platform is an open-source integration layer for financial and other research data, now hosted under OpenBQ. It exposes connected datasets through Python, REST and other interfaces. The software uses the Apache 2.0 licence; connected data providers can impose their own fees and credentials.

Use the platform in a Python project

The repository documents installation with pip install openbb. Its example retrieves a stock price history through obb.equity.price.historical and converts the result to a dataframe. Provider integrations determine which datasets are available.

Running openbb-api starts a local REST backend, allowing another application to use the integration layer. This is useful when notebooks and a research dashboard need the same source configuration. It requires a Python environment and some development work.

Current project home

OpenBQ describes itself as the foundation continuing the stack after OpenBB wound down its commercial business. The data platform repository remains public under Apache 2.0. Treat the installed platform separately from hosted Workspace access: a free software licence does not include every commercial dataset or guarantee that every hosted component has identical availability.

Strengths

  • The same data integrations can serve Python and REST applications
  • Public source and Apache 2.0 licensing support local deployment

Watch out for

  • Provider credentials and data licences remain separate
  • Setup requires a Python environment and technical configuration

Best for

  • Developers building a shared research-data backend
  • Analysts working with financial dataframes
