What it does
pdf2htmlEX converts PDFs into HTML with positioned text, fonts, graphics, links, and outlines. It can produce a single HTML file or a page-loading presentation.
Run the PDF-to-HTML command for a single file, or select a page range, width and destination directory for publishing. Separate assets can use browser caching; split-page output loads pages through JavaScript. Check layered text: the branch can omit fully hidden characters or rasterise partially hidden ones at a higher resolution. Image-based fallback preserves a visual rendering with hidden text but increases file size. CJK rendering needs the documented encoding data. The GPLv3+ package includes resources with separate licence terms to review when distributing its assets.
Strengths
- Preserves positioned text and navigation in an HTML publication.
Watch out for
- Dynamic page loading requires JavaScript; visibility/fallback modes can rasterise text or increase output size.
Best for
- Publishing existing PDF layouts on the web
