What it does
Zipline Reloaded maintains the Python backtesting framework originally developed at Quantopian. It runs strategy callbacks over historical data and returns pandas tables of portfolio results. The Apache-licensed library is free to install locally and now focuses on compatibility, bug and security maintenance.
Zipline's strategy callbacks read historical data and record results through an event-driven engine. Define initial state in initialize, put event-by-event logic in handle_data, and use record for values you want to inspect later.
A run needs a historical data bundle. Ingest the chosen bundle, then use zipline run with the strategy file, start and end dates, and an output filename. The saved performance table contains returns, positions, transactions and recorded values. The command also lets you choose daily or minute data, starting capital, a trading calendar and a benchmark. With --no-benchmark, benchmark-dependent statistics are not calculated.
The library has no subscription or hosted-account requirement. Data providers can require separate registration or an API key; the repository's example identifies that requirement for Nasdaq Data Link. Check the installed release's dependencies before sharing an environment with other research tools: the current package constraints keep pandas below version 3.
Reloaded continues the established Zipline workflow. The maintainers direct new feature development to the separate ML4T Backtest project, so it is particularly relevant when reproducing or maintaining existing Zipline research.
Strengths
- Exposes strategy state, event callbacks and recorded values
- Returns pandas tables for further portfolio analysis
- Provides explicit calendar, capital and benchmark controls
Watch out for
- Current work emphasizes maintenance rather than new features
- Dependency constraints can affect a shared Python environment
Best for
- Python researchers maintaining or reproducing Zipline workflows
- Developers who need event-based backtests with inspectable results
