What it does

ExpenseOwl is a self-hosted personal expense tracker focused on category charts and cash flow. It records income and expenses, supports recurring entries and accepts CSV imports and exports. The MIT-licensed software is free to run on your own server and has no built-in user accounts.

A large fixed cost can dominate a monthly chart. ExpenseOwl lets you exclude a category from the pie chart temporarily, making the remaining spending easier to inspect without deleting the underlying records. Click the category again to restore it.

Date, amount and category are the required entry fields, with optional tags for another grouping. Use Report as gain for income or a reimbursement. The dashboard shows income, expenses and the resulting balance; the table view lists the underlying entries.

The recommended installation is the project's Docker container with persistent storage at /app/data. After deployment, open the browser interface on the configured port. Settings controls categories, the currency symbol and the start of the reporting period. Hosting and maintenance are your responsibility.

Strengths

  • The browser interface can be added to a phone's home screen.
  • Recurring income and expense entries reduce repeated manual entry.

Watch out for

  • It focuses on one person's records and does not provide account management or budget allocations.
  • The application has no built-in authentication; the developer directs network users to provide access control separately.

Best for

  • Self-hosters wanting a small personal spending and cash-flow record
