What it does
jpegoptim is a command-line JPEG optimization and compression utility, with documented builds for Linux, Mac and Windows.
Default optimization adjusts Huffman tables losslessly and replaces an input only when improved. Choose -d for a separate output directory, remembering that unchanged files are not copied there; -o permits replacing existing destination files. Use -n to inspect results without changes. Setting -m quality from 0 to 100 or -S target size enables lossy processing, and a target is not guaranteed. Common EXIF, IPTC, ICC, XMP and comment metadata remain by default; strip/keep options change that policy. The utility is GPL3 open source.
Strengths
- Focused JPEG optimization utility
- Documented cross-platform build support
Watch out for
- Default processing can replace input files, and a separate destination omits unchanged files.
