What it does

mping is a script-friendly multicast ping utility with IPv4 and IPv6 support and explicit sender or receiver roles.

mping needs its own counterpart: the default role receives and reflects the application’s multicast messages, while the sender is selected explicitly. Choose the interface, group and port for the path under investigation. IPv4 and IPv6 are supported, with family determined by the group or explicit IPv6 choice. Its default TTL of 1 confines traffic to the local link; routed testing needs a sufficient TTL at both sender and reflector. The README also calls out reverse-path routing and an interface with multicast support. Reply summaries describe that configured multicast path, so an ordinary unicast host is not a substitute for the reflector.
