What it does

Instant Meshes is an open-source interactive remeshing application from the authors of Instant Field-Aligned Meshes. It solves orientation and position fields before exporting a new surface, with brushes and inspection views for adjusting the result.

Instant Meshes exposes two stages of remeshing: an orientation field controls how the mesh flows, and a position field determines the placement. Its brush tools let you alter those fields instead of accepting only an automatic result.

To use the supplied examples, extract the datasets folder beside the application, launch it and choose Open mesh. Solve the orientation field with the first blue button, then the position field with the second. Export mesh becomes available after both stages are solved. The Advanced panel can display the input, computed fields and output together, and many controls explain themselves when hovered over.

Precompiled 64-bit Intel packages are linked for Windows, Mac and Linux; Linux also requires zenity for the file interface. Building from source uses CMake and platform-specific prerequisites. The software is free to use and modify under its published redistribution licence, which requires retaining the notices and does not permit using the authors’ names to endorse a derived product.

Strengths

  • Brush tools provide direct control over orientation and position fields.
  • The Advanced panel can visualize input, fields and output.

Watch out for

  • Linux requires the separate zenity package.
  • The published precompiled packages target 64-bit Intel systems.

Best for

  • Field-aligned remeshing
  • Mesh-processing research and preparation
