What it does
WordPress Icons provides named SVG drawings and an Icon component for Gutenberg and other JavaScript projects.
WordPress Icons puts Gutenberg's named SVG drawings behind a shared Icon component. A plugin or block-editor interface can install the package, import the required drawing and pass it to that component, keeping icon use close to the surrounding JavaScript components.
Use CSS color for ordinary recoloring. Stroke-based symbols inherit that color and scale their strokes with the icon size; a strokeWidth adjustment uses the drawing's viewBox units. Fill-based symbols do not respond to the same stroke adjustment, so a toolbar containing both needs to be checked at its actual size.
The package assumes an ES2015+ environment and documents a polyfill route for older environments. It is published under GPL-2.0-or-later. Legacy Dashicons remains the older admin icon font and no longer accepts new icon requests; its class-based font behavior should not be assumed to match this SVG component package.
Strengths
- The package documents color inheritance and stroke scaling.
- Named artwork can be used through the supplied Icon component.
Watch out for
- Stroke adjustments do not affect fill-based symbols.
- Legacy Dashicons no longer accepts new icon requests.
Best for
- WordPress plugin and block-editor interfaces
