What it does

The Vorbis tools suite includes oggenc for encoding, oggdec for WAV or raw decoding, ogginfo for stream information, and tools for comments and cutting.

Use oggenc for Vorbis encoding, oggdec for WAV/raw decoding, ogginfo for stream inspection and vorbiscomment for metadata edits. The encoder reads WAV/AIFF/raw audio, with FLAC input dependent on its build. It accepts file or standard-stream output; one explicit output filename is valid only for a single input, while naming patterns support batches. Quality-based VBR defaults to 3 on a -1 to 10 scale, where higher means better quality. A bitrate target still uses VBR unless managed mode is selected. Raw audio needs correct bit-depth/channel/rate/endian settings. The suite requires separate libogg/libvorbis libraries.

Strengths

  • Separates encoding, decoding, stream inspection, and metadata operations.

Best for
