What it does

Goodbudget replaces paper budget envelopes with a shared expense plan on the web, Android and iPhone. The free plan includes 10 regular envelopes, 10 additional envelopes, one account and two devices. Premium expands those limits and adds automatic imports from supported US banks.

Keep spending and future bills in separate envelopes

Create envelopes for your expenses and goals, add the account balances, record income and fill the envelopes. Purchases then reduce the relevant envelope, which shows how much remains for that purpose. Two people can record household purchases against the same plan from different devices.

The setup guide treats accounts and envelopes separately: an account tracks where money is held, while an envelope tracks what it is intended for. Moving money into a holiday envelope is a budgeting action, not a transfer to a bank account.

Free and Premium

Free provides 10 regular and 10 additional envelopes, one account, two devices and one year of history. It includes debt tracking and uses manual transaction entry.

Premium costs US$10 a month or US$80 annually. It allows unlimited envelopes and accounts, five devices and seven years of history. Automatic bank synchronization is limited to supported US banks; the rest of the envelope workflow remains available without a bank feed.

For a copy of your records, use Export CSV above the web transaction list. The downloaded file can be opened in a spreadsheet, which is useful when keeping a longer record outside Goodbudget.

Strengths

  • A household can share one envelope plan
  • CSV export keeps transaction records portable
  • Separate envelopes for regular spending and longer-term goals

Watch out for

  • Free accounts are limited to two devices and one year of history
  • Automatic bank imports require Premium and a supported US bank

Best for

  • Households moving from paper envelopes to a shared digital plan
  • People comfortable entering purchases manually on a free budget
