What it does

GPG Mail is the email component of GPG Suite for macOS. It adds encryption and signing controls to Apple Mail and uses GPG Keychain for managing OpenPGP keys.

GPG Mail places separate lock and signature controls in Apple Mail’s message composer. GPG Keychain manages the OpenPGP keys used by that workflow, including importing contacts’ keys and adding addresses to an existing key.

macOS compatibility is a substantive constraint. The current page describes GPG Mail 8 as a beta with known issues and a support-plan requirement, while noting that some behavior depends on changes in Apple Mail. Read the compatibility notice before upgrading a Mac used for encrypted correspondence.

The beta page offers thirty days only if you have not already started a trial. It requires an active GPG Mail 7 Support Plan and announces a yearly subscription model from GPG Mail 8, so existing-plan credit and beta access need separate attention.

Strengths

  • Apple Mail gains separate OpenPGP signing and encryption controls.
  • The accompanying key manager supports key import and management.

Watch out for

  • The current GPG Mail 8 release is described as a beta with known compatibility issues.
  • The current beta requires an active support plan.

Best for

  • Mac users who need OpenPGP within Apple Mail
