What it does
GrafX2 is a palette-based bitmap drawing program with captured brushes, layers and frame animation. Its tools suit pixel artwork and graphics for older computer formats. The project is distributed as free software under GPL version 2.
Reuse a drawn shape as a brush
Set the picture dimensions in Resolution and Image Size, then draw the shape you want to repeat. Grab Brush captures a rectangular area when you drag across it. Capturing with the right mouse button also replaces the original area with the background colour, so choose the button deliberately.
The palette editor can sort colours by usage or brightness, build gradients and remap the picture while rearranging colour entries. RGB-scale settings help constrain colours to a target machine’s palette.
Use Save As to select the destination and format. PNG and PKM can retain a text comment; specialist export formats have their own pixel and colour restrictions. For example, the documented Commodore 64 modes impose limits within small blocks of pixels.
Strengths
- A piece of the image can become a reusable brush
- Palette rearrangement can preserve the image’s appearance
- Includes export modes for several older computers
Watch out for
- Some target formats impose strict local colour limits
- Right-button brush capture also clears the captured area
Best for
- Palette-controlled pixel drawings
- Graphics targeting retro computer display modes
