What it does
Granger provides historical pictures through keyword and subject browsing. It offers custom scans for larger reproductions, with each image’s permitted use defined by the agreement and invoice.
Image records show the reference number, dimensions, file size and release status. The Gettysburg Address lithograph, item 0008417, is listed at 3240 × 2309 pixels and 11.6 MB, with a Download preview control. Its caption distinguishes the 1863 event from the lithograph made in 1905.
Standard files are nine inches on the longest side at 360 ppi. For a larger output, ask for a custom scan at the required dimensions. Image-use fees are quoted for the intended medium, placement, territory and duration; card orders are paid at checkout before download.
Granger does not offer royalty-free images. Its contract also applies to access to files of public-domain works, without guaranteeing underlying copyright or model/property releases. Cropping must preserve editorial integrity; other alterations, colourisation and AI-tool use need separate written permission.
Strengths
- Image records expose dimensions, file size and release status.
- Custom scans can be prepared to the project’s required dimensions.
Watch out for
- Licences are use-specific and do not automatically clear underlying rights.
- Alteration beyond permitted cropping needs written permission.
Best for
- Picture researchers preparing historical publications
