What it does

GreenBooks is a paid personal money-management web app centered on accounts, transactions and spending reports. It can be installed from a browser on a phone or computer and offers a 34-day trial without a card. Create a GreenBooks account with your email; bank connections are optional and limited to the United States and Canada.

Enter a transaction, give it a category and use Breakdown to see where the month's spending went. On a keyboard, N opens a new entry and Tab moves through its fields. Returning payees bring back their usual category, and a mixed purchase can be split before it reaches the report.

Begin by adding your accounts, then use manual records or optional bank imports. GreenBooks keeps the account register and spending views together, with scheduled transactions for recurring items. The current product runs in a browser; existing Mac or iPhone customers create a new account for this web version.

Annual access costs $79, including bank sync, after the 34-day trial. A monthly subscription is also offered. The annual amount is charged as a yearly bill; the displayed $6.58-per-month figure is its equivalent monthly cost.

Strengths

  • Records can be exported as CSV or QIF
  • Separate books can keep an organization's records apart from household spending

Watch out for

  • There is no category-budget or envelope-allocation feature

Best for

  • People who want to understand actual spending through reports instead of allocating envelopes
