What it does
gscan2pdf is a graphical scanning application that produces PDF and DjVu documents. It uses SANE for scanner access and can import existing PDF, DjVu, or image files.
Scan pages, select or drag them into order and save the chosen pages as PDF or DjVu. OCR adds a hidden text layer behind the scanned images for searching. With a non-duplex scanner, facing and reverse passes can be numbered and sorted into order. The free, open-source application targets Linux and BSD with SANE-capable scanners; available controls depend on the scanner and installed helper tools. PDF import mainly extracts images to round-trip its own files, so it is unsuitable as a general PDF content editor.
Strengths
- Combines scanner input with selected-page document assembly.
Watch out for
- PDF import is mainly for round-tripping the application's scanned files.
- Scanner capabilities and installed helper tools determine which functions are available.
Best for
- Producing PDF or DjVu packets from a document scanner
