What it does
Gwyddion processes scanning-probe microscopy data, height fields and greyscale images through levelling, filtering and statistical analysis.
Gwyddion needs a distinction between saving analysis data and making a picture of it. After levelling or marking grains in a microscopy height field, save a native .gwy file to keep the data structures the user guide describes. Saving another format can export only a subset, often the active image without its masks or presentations. Image export is useful for a figure with a scale bar, labels and chosen rendering, but it is not a replacement for that native file. High-depth greyscale export offers another path for quantitative work: the guide says 16-bit exports stretch the data to the greyscale range, while OpenEXR provides a scaling choice.
